History

The Fence Gate was built in 1782, but it is believed buildings have been present on the site since the late 1400s.

Its name is derived from the entire valley once being completely fenced off to provide Cromwell with a deer-hunting park.

The building was initially known as the Fence Yate, but over the years it became the Fence Gate.

The stone-built property later became the Dower House for cotton transported up the Leeds-Liverpool canal. Cotton bales were broken down at Fence Gate and delivered to crofters’ cottages for spinning.
